LJUBLJANA
Ljubljana, Slovenia's pint-sized capital, is a whimsical blend of old-style charm and modern sophistication. Boasting an alfresco café culture, pastel-hued facades and art nouveau architecture, Slovenia also pays homage to its folklore (find dragon sculptures sprinkled across the city).
Since the the Roman Empire reign, Ljubljana has most recently gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Enduring Napoleon's rule and following the liberation during World War II, the city is now seen as one of Europe’s greenest capitals, an area that has swapped the urban chaos for slower sustainability practices.
THINGS TO DO
Spend an afternoon along the Ljubljanica River
Lounge at a riverside café (for a decadent pastry), or stroll the famous bridges that lead to the Central Market, boasting an abundance of Slovenian produce. Day or night, the atmosphere is lively along the embankment, ideal for taking a river cruise or an afternoon aperitif.
Ljubljana Castle
History is paired with a commanding view from Ljubljana Castle. Dating back to the 11th century and designed as a medieval fortress, the castle has withstood feudal battles and royal ceremonies. Maintaining a defensive stronghold throughout history, the Castle has undergone numerous transformations, blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles.
Day trip to Lake Bled
A 40-minute drive from Ljubljana, Lake Bled is a dreamy Alpine region, worthy of a one-night stay. Begin with a boat ride on a traditional pletna to the iconic Bled Island, before returning for a small hike up to Bled Castle for 360-degree views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Sampling the famous Bled cream cake (kremšnita) with lakeside views at the Grand Hotel Toplice is absolutely necessary.
STAY
Modern, edgy, and perfectly positioned. Located in the old town, the hotel is equipped with views of the castle, comfort, and a short walking distance to all the restaurants/cafes on the list.
A luxury urban retreat nestled in the heart of the city, where every detail is advanced in design. With a castle view from the rooftop sundeck and 30 ritzy rooms fulfilling the boutique tick, AS is the premium experience.
RESTAURANTS
The Michelin-noted restaurant is positioned in the medieval centre of the city, inspired by Istrian Mediterranean flavours. Dishes are curated in artistic form, reimagining octopus carpaccio with trout caviar, and cod loin partnered with swiss chard, crabmeat, delicately doused in sour cream.
Georgie bistro
Located in an unsuspecting street on the outskirts of the old town, Georgie Bistro is edgy, and all buzz. With unique flavours and Slovenian organic wines, this is another Michelin-approved spot. Select from the multi-course omakase or sample dishes from cannelloni with truffles, or cuttlefish with aguachile and watermelon.
Julija
An understated spot in the old town, serving authentic Slovenian fare that packs flavour. The non-negotiable items are Slovenian cheese ‘štruklji’ (dumplings) and duck confit with polenta and sour cherry sauce, all locally inspired.
BARS
For some people watching on the terrace with a selection of prominent European wines, cocktails that kick, or a ‘Zganje’ (local Schnapps).
Set in a contemporary two-storey space (a former Yugoslavian factory), sample the various tapas dishes paired with wines from Slovenian vineyards (emphasis on the organic orange wine). Minimalist in design, and the option to stay for the fine dining.
A tranquil spot to switch off with sips and small plates, in an endearing courtyard. A hidden bar within the city to settle in for a Slovenian Pinot Noir from the Ritoznoj region.
As one of Europe’s low-fi treasures, Ljubljana is a place where dragons guard bridges and street art shares space with centuries-old architecture. A city for riverside sips and where impromptu jazz performances take form, Ljubljana is where old-world charm meets a modern, eco-friendly groove.
